Art

 The Al Sahwa Schools’ Art curriculum is for grades K-8 and IGCSE grades 9 and 10.  Our curriculum is based on the belief that a good Art education is a fundamental part of a complete education.  Students are introduced to a wide variety of art experiences and are challenged to:

 Develop critical thinking skills and artistic perception.  To observe and analyze the way images communicate through visual means.

 Understand and respond to the visual Elements and Principles of Art and explore how these elements and principles contribute to the expressive qualities of students’ work.

 Explore a variety of media in order to communicate meaning and intent using a wide range of artistic skills.  Students will have the opportunity to utilize different mediums and techniques through:

 *           Drawing

*           Painting

*           Printmaking

*           Sculpture

*           Clay

*           Crafts

 Recognize and appreciate the historical, stylistic and cultural contexts of artwork.

 Connect and apply what is learned to other forms, subject areas and careers.

 Music

 Music at Al Sahwa is for grades K-8.  It is a sequential program in that students continuously attain greater levels of refinement in the ongoing skills of performing, listening, composing, ensemble and literacy as they advance through the grade levels.  Through the use of various instruments, songs and compositions, students learn to:

 Listen and Respond to a wide range of music. They explore and enjoy the way sounds and silence can create different moods and effects. Students learn to explore their thoughts and feelings through responding physically, intellectually and emotionally to variety of music from different times and cultures.

 Play and Compose while learning confidence, skill, expression and awareness in a group or an individual class performance. They improvise, and develop their own musical compositions, while increasing personal involvement, independence and creativity. Students play musical instruments and sing a variety of songs from memory, adding accompaniments and creating short compositions, gaining confidence, imagination and control.

 Musical Knowledge and Understanding.  Students continue to increase their knowledge, skills and understanding of music at more complex levels, building from the foundations of previous years.

 

Physical Education

 

Students at all grade levels participate in a variety of sports and activities at Al Sahwa.  Encouraging students to take part and be actively involved in a range of active experiences is the main objective.  In the P.E. program all students participate and develop skills in: 

Fitness:  Students have the opportunity to develop new skills and refine those that they have already mastered. Students are encouraged to increase their fitness through participation. They are given the tools and knowledge to make healthy lifestyle choices and improve their holistic physical and mental development. 

Sport:  The program consists of team and individual sport.  Students are encouraged to attempt and participate in sports and activities that are both known and unfamiliar.  An international focus on many different sports is the overall aim.  

 Competition:  The students have the opportunity to compete in both interclass and erschool competitions.  These competitions take place in many different events including table tennis, football, basketball and athletics. 

 The school has shared facilities between the boys’ and the girls’ school including a 20 meter covered and heated swimming pool, grass football field, indoor multipurpose gymnasium, indoor fitness room and two outdoor multipurpose courts.
